It’s the biggest surfing event on the mainland, year in and year out. With half a million people (literally, that many) jamming into Huntington Beach for the week of festivities, it’s almost a be there or be square scenario for surfers with the means to get to Southern California. But then again, it’s kind of a junk show. And by kind of we mean it’s a fricken junk show. Teenagers in bikinis you thought were reserved for Reef Girls, riots, more drunks than an Oakland Raiders tailgate party, and if you’re lucky…maybe some good surfing to watch. But then again the US Open of Surfing can be a great time and a good ole celebration of all things surf if you can tune out all the extra curriculars that surround it. So, should you go – potentially have a great time, make a few new friends, watch the women on tour duke it out and possibly an awesome men’s final? Or nah – the zoo that becomes downtown Huntington Beach could scar you for life.
This is the question some of us must answer every summer. Am I going to the US Open or not?
