The Inertia

Whales are the gentle giants of the ocean. Humpbacks in particular can weigh upwards of 75-thousand pounds, and reach 52 feet in length. But in spite of their grandiosity, they feed on krill and small fish.

With the recent deaths of Wally the whale, another whale that washed ashore at Trestles, and the 13 whales with plastic found in their digestive systems in Germany, the last several months have been rife with sad news for whale lovers.

But in spite of the sad news in whaledom of late, this flute playing, SUPing woman had an incredible encounter with a juvenile humpback whale in Half Moon Bay.

Playing her flute whilst on paddle board, the video shows the humpback breaching right next to her board. Humpbacks are sonic creatures. Males are known to produce 10 to 20-minute songs they sometimes repeat for hours. Perhaps the flute was attractive.

Viviana Guzman, the flûteuse herself, says of the experience, “I play my flute for the whales, and they come! I was paddle boarding in Half Moon Bay, CA when all of the sudden a juvenile humpback leaped out of the water and lunge fed RIGHT NEXT TO ME!”

Maybe the whale was just looking for a better seat at its personal concert?
