The Inertia

The incremental clean up of our oceans is unquestionably difficult. But it’s possible. And initiatives like “A Day Without a Disposable Bag” in Malibu will make it happen. The people behind initiatives like this one understand the collective decision-making and mobilization involved in halting coastal degradation.

“A Day Without a Disposable Bag” is a day that helps us begin to replace plastic “grocery style” bags with stylish reusable totes, one bag at a time.

The City of Malibu’s ban on plastic bags applies to all city faculties and city-sponsored events as well as all commercial and not-for-profit retailer and vendors on city and public property. The initiative sends a clear message of Malibu’s stated quest to protect its marine environment.

The event is this Thursday, so if you’re in L.A. (or not in L.A.!), check it out, and make a difference.

What: Third Annual “A Day Without a Disposable Bag”, December 15, 2011

Where: Free, reusable tote bag wil be distributed at five different locations: Ralph’s Market in Malibu Colony Plaza; Pavilions Market at Heatherfliff Road; Pacific Coast Greens at 22601 Pacific Coast Highway; Banana Republic in Malibu Village Plaza and in the Cross Creek Road shopping District.

When: The giveaway event will take place at each location from 11 a.m to 1 p.m. and from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. with reported special guest appearance of the Bag Monster!

Success of the event relies on sustained commitment.

The common use of reusable tote bags, like those to be given away at the locations and times listed above, reduces energy use and conserves natural resources, which reduces landfill waste and curbs pollution associated with the petroleum-based non-biodegradable plastic bag.

And it’s not just about the health of our oceans—it’s about the larger health of all of living things on this planet. One reusable bag campaign at a time, we can slowly (and incrementally) reverse environmental damage.
