It’s not often two different apex predators go at it. That’s where the nomenclature comes from, actually. There is limited interaction between species that find themselves at the top of the food chain because, well, there’s typically no reason for it – typically being the operative word.
That’s what makes the fact that Captain William Wall of Pelagic Charters caught this battle between a tiger shark and hammerhead on camera so strange. Captain Wall wrote of the encounter on Instagram: “Ok, so this happened last week tuna fishing. We catch a hammerhead while tuna fishing and a large, 13-14 tiger shark lurked him up from the deep and proceeded to stalk him boat side and eventually ate him next to my boat. All on go pro video. 10 minutes to be exact.” In a video posted later, Captain Wall estimated the tiger shark weighed in excess of 1,000 lbs.
