The Inertia

A study recently announced that not only are more Americans using anxiety drugs, but users are taking higher doses, and more people are overdosing on anxiety drugs than ever before. In fact, the number has quadrupled over the last two decades. Something in the health care system is failing us, but it’s difficult to know what. Perhaps more troubling to consider is that our world continues to produce more anxiety in our lives, despite technology’s constant push to make everyday life easier. Never before have so many struggled with crippling anxiety. It just doesn’t add up.

To make things more difficult, there’s no simple answer for treating or curing anxiety. Every person is different, and what works for one might fail for another. That being said, there’s something to be said for breaking free of the pharmacy. Nature offers some of the best medicine available. Almost all doctors recommend exercise and sunlight for those coping with anxiety, and the world gives us beautiful scenery to enjoy: hills to hike and waves to ride. However, nature also has other, frequently overlooked, cures for stress: natural remedies and herbs. Below are a handful of accessible, natural solutions that can help ease your anxiety. Consider these remedies before turning to pills and powders.

Passionflower

Passionflower has been proven to be equally effective in the treatment of stress, anxiety, depression, and insomnia as several anti-anxiety medications. The petals, leaves, and stems can be used to brew tea, and it has long been used as a calming therapy in the Americas. Scientists believe that passionflower stimulates the production of gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain. This chemical lowers the activity of certain brain cells, which has a calming effect.

Ashwagandha is a powerful herb that can be consumed in tea or tincture form. Typically the root of the plant is used. It’s known for it’s strengthening and rejuvenating qualities. Ashwagandha helps lower the stress hormone, cortisol, which can help your body regain energy and focus. It’s also known as an adaptogenic herb that helps your body process and cope with external stress. As an added bonus, Ashwagandha is a sturdy cancer fighter.

Rhodiola

Rhodiola is also a strong adaptogen, helping your body functions to remain normal even under external stress. Rhodiola also works wonders for increasing your energy level and enhancing your memory. It can also help elevate the body’s exercise capacity. The herb has been used across the world for centuries by cultures as varied as the Greeks, the Vikings, and the Chinese. It is believed that Rhodiola can increase the transport of serotonin precursors into the brain, helping to create a sense of wellbeing.

Lavender

Lavender can be used in several different ways to ease anxiety. The plant itself can be used in teas and baths for a soothing effect. Lavender oil is commonly used in aromatherapy. The concentrated scent of lavender can induce both calm and sleep. For a restful slumber, put a couple drops on your pillow before you go to sleep. Sweet dreams.

Chamomile

Chamomile is best known in its tea form, but you can also consume it as a supplement. It is believed that chamomile binds to the same brain receptors as anti-anxiety drugs like Valium. Next time you’re feeling anxious, sip on a cup of chamomile tea, and you’ll feel your body begin to calm down.
