The Inertia

Not sure what to make of this rather large contraption built by the good folks at Mountain Dew. I asked a couple of my trusted snowboarding contributors to take a gander at it and they didn’t want to touch it. So I’ll at least comment: It’s like click bait for the television screen. It looks somewhat interesting. Mountain Dew and Snow Park Technologies created SuperSnake to give skaters and snowboarders a platform they could play on at the same time? Snowboarding, of course, has borrowed heavily from skateboarding so that part makes sense. Snowboarders Danny Davis, Jeremy Jones and Scotty Lago rode with skaters Trevor Colden, Chris Colbourn, Jordan Maxham, Nick Tucker and Micky Papa. The talent is beyond legit.

But ESPN (EXPN, XGames, etc.) seems to have invested a lot lately in these stunt-ish shows they play on ABC’s World of X Games on Disney parent channel, ABC (obviously, there could be an ad trade for content I’m not privy to). The last one was BMX icon Kevin Robinson (below) setting a world record with the longest motor-assisted backflip at 84 feet. Huh?

Love the exposure for these athletes, but I want to see ESPN (EXPN) do great stories like we know they can—action sports stories the general public could latch on to. Again, there may be something in the works (like a Dave Mirra documentary whose career will be eternally tied to the network). Regardless, SuperSnake will televise Sunday, October 16, 2016 during ABC’s ‘World of X Games’ series at 1pm Pacific Time.
