My name is Maxi González. I’m a surfer and a comic script writer. I suppose it was only a matter of time before I would merge my two passions, and share my unconditional love for surfing and the ocean doing what I do best: writing comics. And I was fortunate enough to persuade some incredibly talented artists to participate in this madness.
Thus, SURF & COMICS was born. We decided to publish our comics for free on the internet, across all platforms that are interested in sharing it. Our desire is to reach surfers around the world who want to read comics about surfing.
Our first comic was The Wave Conjurer. The premise is a crusty old surfer tells students at a surf school about a mythical a man who could speak to the sea and conjure incredible waves at will.
The Ones You Leave Behind is our second work. This comic doesn’t have the optimism and good vibes that The Wave Conjurer does. It’s a story about a touchy subject, that’s on the minds of all people who practice adventure sports. The idea came to me after a terrifying surf session.
Then we published Surfer Unknown, a little tribute to all the anonymous surfers of the world who are out there looking for waves. Then Crowded Surf, which tackles overcrowding lineups, but with sense of humor.
Damn Whatsapp is our most recent work. In Europe especially, groups of surfers use WhatsApp to alert each other when the waves are firing. In the modern age, what with web cams and social media, it’s even tougher to keep a secret about an amazing day at your local break. And we feel it’s a plight every surfer can relate to.
