More and more women are beginning to travel to find waves. Surfing isn’t completely dominated by men. Plenty of females are beginning to venture out on their own in search of adventure, waves, and community. I am so grateful for being able to take surf trips in Central America. So if you or your girlfriends are planning a surf trip, be sure to check out these spots along the way.

Whether you have your surf girl gang ready to go, or you want to embark on the surf trip solo, these five places need to be on your travel list. Each town is different and has a wave to offer for the surfer in you. Happy wave hunting!

Sayulita, Mexico

sayulita

This charming little fishing village is a perfect spot for the beginner surfer. With a main break just right in front of the beach, Sayulita is the perfect place for you to practice. The town itself is colorful and full of life and I recommend stopping here on your journey for some delicious, local Mexican food. Experience the culture and get to know the locals. You will not be disappointed.

San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua

San Juan del Sur is loud and proud. There is always a party in town. With beautiful sunsets and cheap beer, many people end up staying here forever. Although the breaks are not in walking distance, there are various waves for any level. San Juan is definitely worth checking out. For the surfer who is just learning to ride waves to the one who is ready to take on barrels, San Juan has it all.

Mal Pais, Costa Rica

Set on the Pacific side of Costa Rica, Mal Pais is enchanting. Breathtaking sunsets, white, sandy beaches and fun waves that break just perfectly. For a girl’s surf trip, this is your place. After a long morning surf session pop into one of the artsy cafes along the way for a big, healthy breakfast or a pressed juice. And you can’t forget about Costa Rica’s famous coffee.

Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica

Set on the opposite side of Costa Rica, Puerto Viejo is its own magical place. With crystal clear water, untouched beaches and tropical lush jungle, you are in fact in the Caribbean. Although the wave here is not conducive to beginners it is a great place to advance your skills and work on those maneuvers you have been practicing. Looking for a getaway in the jungle with the sounds of nature around you? This is your place.

Bocas del Toro, Panama

bocas del toro

For all you surfers who love reef breaks, Bocas del Toro is the perfect place for you. Set as a group of islands off the Caribbean coast of Panama, Bocas del Toro has many different breaks to offer. Here, there is a wave for everyone. From soft, longboarding waves to fast and hollow barrels, Bocas is worth checking out. Snorkeling, diving, and ocean wildlife tours are also wildly popular due to bright blue ocean and colorful marine life.
