The Inertia

Adam Replogle has a great outlook on life. He wants happiness, which is a surprisingly rare quality if one judges people by the majority of their actions. “Most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be,” said Abe Lincoln (maybe?).

Replogle, a Santa Cruz native, used to surf on the tour. Now, though, he spends his time with two girls, working for Billabong, collecting pennies, feeding the homeless, and trying very, very hard to manage his stoke levels. He seems to be failing at the last part, however, but that’s one of those rare moments where failure is a great success. “You know how some people have to pump up to get amped?” he asks. “I have to calm down.”

Kyle Buthman, an extraordinarily talented filmmaker from Santa Cruz, has a series entitled Brainwork. If you haven’t had the pleasure of watching it, you should set aside some time, because Buthman offers an entertaining and original look at some very interesting people.

Replogle seems to have his key to happiness firmly figured out. It’s surfing, kindness, and enjoying his time here on this funny place we call Earth. A Vonnegut quote comes to mind when listening to Replogle laugh his way through life: “At the outside, babies, you’ve got about a hundred years here. There’s only one rule that I know of, babies—God damn it—you’ve got to be kind.”
