A great white shark was spotted swimming in the waters of Lake Macquarie on Thursday morning. According to the Newcastle Herald, the shark about 2.5 meters in length and experts described the shark as “a juvenile that was likely not a threat to swimmer and appeared to just be curious.”

Lake Macquarie is located in New South Wales, just 80 miles north of Sydney. The shark swam through a channel which is a fairly large opening into the ocean. Although this may appear to be surprising to most, sharks swimming through the channel and into the lake is quite common this time of year. The water is fairly warmer inside the channel which requires less work for sharks to stay warm.

Clinton Bambach, the man who captured the video, explained to the Newcastle Herald, “‘It was doing loops and chasing baits. A bloke saw how excited I was getting as I filmed so he came over and slapped the water and the thing wheeled around. You could have stepped on it, it came in so close, in just two foot of water.’’
