Hoo boy, is this ever awkward. I love it. NBC decided that Kelly Slater, Coco Ho, Gabriel Medina, Julian Wilson, Courtney Conlogue, Greg Long and CJ Hobgood should visit the the Today Show to talk about the North American leg of the Tour. It’s just another one of those things that highlights surfing’s hesitant lean towards the mainstream. To Kelly and Coco’s credit, they did pretty well with a situation that must’ve felt pretty weird – standing fully dressed with your surfboard in downtown Manhattan is not the most normal of situations. Coco even managed to slip in a Samsung plug, while the others stood there wondering what to do with their hands and smiling at each other. If they had thrown a few stiff-fingered shakas and quoted a few lines from Fast Times, it might have been just as forced as the title the Today Show went with: Kelly Slater and Coco Ho Hang Ten on the Today Show.
