In attempting to explain to my girlfriend what a perfect heat was, at the time I felt it was most adequate to compare it to a hole-in-one in golf, pitching a no-hitter in baseball, or bowling a 300. But if we were to actually compare a perfect heat to the ultimate performance in these other sports, it wouldn’t quite match up, as a perfect heat has only occurred (now) seven times in professional surfing history. It’s more like the royal flush of surfing. Only more rare. This massive accomplishment also marks Owen’s personal best performance in Fiji, as he’ll be moving into the quarters tomorrow morning.
