The Inertia

After five days of swell unfit for a WCT contest, the 2013 Roxy Pro Biarritz has called off competition due to lack of surf. Roxy is rescheduling the event in Hossegor, located just down the road, for September in conjunction with the Quiksilver Pro France. This means that the world’s best female rippers will still be able to fight for the 2013 ASP Women’s World Title, as well as campaign for requalification for the 2014 season.

“It’s been a challenging week surf wise, but the world’s best female surfers have still enjoyed themselves in the beautiful town of Biarritz,” said Jessi Miley-Dyer, ASP Women’s World Tour Manager. “While we’re disappointed that the swell never manifested for this year’s event, we’re very pleased to announce that Roxy has committed to rescheduling the event to run in conjunction with the Quiksilver Pro France men’s event in late September. This will allow the 2013 ASP Women’s World Title race as well as the requalification campaigns of the world’s best female surfers to continue in the best possible fashion.”

Roxy isn’t excited that the swell never made landfall for this year’s Pro Biarritz. That said, they are eager to bring the world’s top 17 female surfers back to the southwest of France for another shot at the classic beachbreak barrels the region is known for. They have been a long-time proponent of the ASP Women’s WCT putting events on the map all over the world. Roxy remains positive the event in Hossegor will showcase what Biarritz should have been able to had conditions complied.

“The city of Biarritz fully supports this decision as it is the best possible option for the sport and women surfing,” stated Michel Poueyts, Biarritz council representative.

“Roxy is 100% committed to showcasing the world’s best female surfers,” Roxy Pro Biarritz Contest Director and 4x World Champion, Lisa Andersen said. “We’ve enjoyed great success with waves during this window in the past but were unlucky this year. That said, we look forward to seeing the ASP top 17 return to France in September and we’ll be back to bring you the Roxy Pro France.”

News of the rescheduling comes as welcome relief to the world’s best female surfers, all anticipating eight elite events this season in which they would do battle. A complete cancellation of one of the eight events would narrow down the playing field dramatically. With the rescheduling, the same possibilities for World Champion and World Tour requalification apply.

“We’re totally at the mercy of mother nature and she didn’t come to the party this week,” said Tyler Wright, ASP Women’s WCT rankings leader. “It’s a really unique situation so I’m thankful to the ASP and Roxy that we get to come back to the southwest of France. I love the croissants and I’m sure we’ll get some great waves in September.”

The Roxy Pro France will now take place along side the men’s Quiksilver Pro France which runs from September 24-30, 2013.

The next stop on the 2013 ASP Women’s World Championship Tour will be the Vans US Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach from July 22-28, 2013.
