The Inertia

Ever since Stu Kennedy slayed one giant after another at the 2016 Quik Pro Gold Coast as an injury wildcard, there’s been a massive buzz surrounding his chosen weapon and the rest of the Slater Designs line. Last night, for example, I saw a guy out at Lowers with one. He was fenced in by a gang of curious and conceivably envious surfers who wanted to know dimensions, prices, where he got it, and all that good stuff. The guy was easily the coolest cat in the lineup for it. And at around $700-$800 for a single stick, I wouldn’t be surprised if he got robbed on his way up.

Slater Designs, namely the Sci-Fi, are going like hotcakes. And it’s with good reason: they work damn well. It was contrived by shaping wizard Daniel “Tomo” Thompson. The spacey design boasts a double bat tail of sorts and a quadruple concave, providing an unrivaled speed and seamlessness, not to mention it gives a little help for those who it (let’s face it, we all do). Here Stu Kennedy takes one for a spin at J-Bay and around his home in Australia, where his surfing can be best described as a hot knife through a stick of butter.
