The Inertia

In the modern age, our thumbs work hard. All of that texting, calling, game playing, and selfie sending we do on our smartphones each day is enough to guarantee everyone the same thumb strength as Hulk Hogan. But hey brother, what if all of that thumb sweat you’re generating could also promote social good?

Surfr is an app that allows surfers to report conditions, log their sessions, and share elements of their surfing life. Recently, though, the promotion of social good has become a focal point of the app. Surfers can now identify communities with specific social needs (i.e. medical, sanitation, conservation, or clean water). This app is a breeze to use, and is absolutely necessary if you’re a traveling surfer with a smartphone.

Although Surfr itself doesn’t provide any of the resources necessary to solve the problems that users identify, this may be something they expand once surfers get on board. The point is that the app lays the groundwork for traveling surfers to do something about it themselves. And if you’re a traveler on a surf trip and recognize a need, but in that place and time don’t have the resources necessary to help, what’s the harm in spreading awareness about what you’ve seen? At the very least you did some good while working those thumbs.
