Grinding down a shallow sandbar in New Jersey

The Inertia

The New Jersey coast has seen it all, from Hurricane Sandy to the Situation’s abs. Yet the surf community and its care for the coast and surf run deeper than ever in the Garden State. The surf media and industry may gloss over this stretch of coast, except for a few chocolate barrels each January, but we know Jerseyites are lovers and fighters who do what it takes to protect the coast they love.

One place in particular, Farias Surf Shop, has long been a pillar of the surf community here as well as a stalwart partner of Save The Waves. Last year, the LBI shop welcomed Ramon Navarro and the Save The Waves team, as part of Patagonia’s tour of the film The Fisherman’s Son, during the 2015 Save The Waves Film Festival. It’s the perfect place and the perfect community to bring the festival right back to this year.

One of the goals of the film festival is to inspire people to get involved and to take action in their own communities. We saw the people of Jersey come together in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. We saw that sea level rise is a real issue that is here and now. Films like The More Things Change… and Patrimonio highlight how fragile our coastal systems are when confronting climate change in combination with other threats.

“We hope that the films and the issues highlighted in the film festival continue to fuel a sense of stewardship for our coasts,” says STW Film Festival Director, Trey Highton.

Editor’s Note: The Save The Waves Film Festival is presented by Pacifico and GoPro, with support from Parley, Patagonia, Peak Design, Klean Kanteen, Clif Bar, and The Inertia. You can find a full list of films and ticket information for this year’s event here.

Save The Waves is proud to have the second stop of the 2016 STW Film Festival in Long Beach Island, NJ at the famous Farias Surf Shop this coming Aug 27.
