The Inertia

A few weeks ago, a dead whale washed ashore at Dockweiler Beach in LA. Dockweiler’s a popular place, and the whale, who researchers had named Wally, was a very, very big nuisance. It was almost Independence Day, and a huge dead whale was stinking up the beach. Eventually, authorities tied a rope around it, dragged it out to sea, and hoped for the best. But Wally, a female humpback, just won’t go away–at least her body won’t. Her most recent appearance? Grandview Beach in Encinitas, California.

Just a week after Wally was bulldozed to the water’s edge and towed out at Dockweiler, her carcass showed up at Newport Beach and San Pedro. She was towed farther out to sea a few times before ending up in Encinitas on Saturday. According to the San Diego Union Tribune, she’s washed up at least six times in different places.

Authorities tried to get rid of her again on Sunday, but the tide was too high. They’re planning on towing her out to sea again today with the low tide… but it probably won’t be the last we see of her.
