The Inertia

Haydenshapes is a brand name that seems to have grown in leaps and bounds recently. Hayden Cox founded the label in 1997 and it was the three-time Surfboard of the Year winner, the Hypto Krypto, that cemented him as a shaper pushing the boundaries of modern surfboard design. With FutureFlex Technology, Cox started stripping his designs of the traditional stringer and building a carbon fiber frame around the outside of his boards instead. Ideas like this are why and how Haydenshapes thrives on experimenting with surfboards instead of rolling with the status quo.

In this short documentary, Hayden reflects on his early days as a surfboard shaper, where he’s at now, and the influences that have shaped him along the way. He explains his approach to different board designs, the Haydenshapes black and white aesthetic, why he believes the Hypo Krypto is such a successful board, and how envisions the future progression of surfboard design.
