The Inertia

Compared to the consistency of last winter’s El Niño, springtime was a bit of a dud. Plagued by terrible winds, it was rarely worthy of surf. It was as if someone flipped off the switch to the wave machine on the first day of April. Thankfully, it’s July now, and summer is in full swing. The water is warm, the sun is (often) out, and the south swells are plentiful.

Among the thousands of surfers enjoying the fruits of the Pacific, 16-year-old grommet Ryland Rubens (pictured above) has been taking full advantage of the conditions. Even winter magnets around San Diego have been dishing out south swell goodness. The crowds have been overwhelming, but every half hour or so, the canyon sets come and clean up the crowd, bringing balance back to the lineup.
