The Inertia

Depending on where you surf, there’s a good chance that you often surf with seals. They’re cute, aren’t they? Like dogs of the sea, they poke their heads up and look at you with those big, glistening eyes. Seals, though, are predators, through and through. Just have a look at what happens when they get their hands/flippers on an octopus.

The scuffle occurred off New Zealand’s South Island on June 20th. WhenConner Stapley, a kayaking guide, took three tourists out, they noticed that a fur seal was involved in a brawl with an octopus.

“I noticed a big flock of sea birds just congregating nearby – that is normally a sign there is something happening – and then the fight began,” Stapley told the U.K. Mirror.

The fight lasted just under a half hour, and–unsurprisingly–ended with the seal victorious.

“The octopus had no chance really,” Stapley said. “Seals love eating them and will eat up to 7kg of octopus a day, around here it is a staple part of their diet.”
