The Inertia

Individual will power is an amazing thing. It has the ability to lift a person above their perceived capabilities to perform previously unimaginable feats. Martyn Ashton has plenty of individual will power. A British and World Champion mountain bike trials rider, Martyn is largely credited with the sport’s outsized increase in popularity.

Ever heard of Road Bike Party?

Yep, that’s him.

Without Martyn, dudes like Vittorio Brumotti wouldn’t enjoy the platform and widespread recognition that they do. Unfortunately, a tragic accident at a demo in 2013 (shooting Road Bike Party 2) left the legend paralyzed from the waist down. But no matter, Martyn kept pressing on, for his family and the community he considered as much.

And now he is back on track, mountain bike tracks no less, once again ripping on two wheels. How did he do it? By taking that individual will power and combining it with a collective energy to rise high above his circumstances. Where does he get this collective energy from? His friends — specifically Danny MacAskill, Chris Akrigg, Blake Samson, and Robin Kitchin.

Humans really do have the ability to be AWESOME. Anyway, that is the smile of a man who embodies the Beatles’ timeless classic and truly gets by with a little help from his friends.
