The Inertia

Wow, winter is off to a big start in parts of Montana today as some places, like Browning east of Glacier National Park, received 48 inches of snow over a two-day period. Montana Governor Steve Bullock declared a state of emergency as a thousands of people were reported to be without power at times during the weekend.

As we reported Friday, the storm was said to have “historic” potential by the National Weather Service in Great Falls and it lived up to its billing, dumping 19 inches in Great Falls in that two-day period, which has only happened one other time in recorded history there during any month.

The storm came with wicked winds and cold temperatures, sending Montanans into early hibernation. The governor released a statement letting his constituents know that crews were working to clear roads and to keep travel safe, and at a minimum, if possible.

As for resorts, most of the northern mountains received a healthy dump like Washington’s Steven’s Pass, Idaho’s Schweitzer Mountain and Montana’s Big Sky (not to mention Jackson Hole). Winter is bearing down a freight-train and the conductor just might be drunk, considering how early it is.
