The Inertia

The last massive swell that slammed in Teahupoʻo revealed a lot of things to the surfing world. First, the entire planet is still captivated when the mutant wave at the end of the road goes richter. Also, the best surfers in the world may not reside on the CT alone. And this boil, as it opens up adjacent to Teahupoʻo’s main section as the wave breaks on the reef, looks like a portal to the underworld. Where is all that water going?

“Watching what went down these past couple swells in Tahiti was pretty mind blowing,” Keahi de Aboitiz told us after sending this clip. “There were some unbelievable waves and rides but one of the things that stood out for me was just how much water was moving in and around the lagoon. Since the main crack/channel was completely full of boats (which you can see on the right at the end of the clip) we opted for the more pulled back angle to watch a few sets. This was the side effect of what those sets were doing further down the reef where it’s basically a straight drop off into the channel. Crazy to watch and looked like it was basically opening up a portal to hell each time!”

Kelly Slater even commented on Keahi’s Instagram page regarding the gigantic black hole that opened up with a simple, “No thanks.” Pretty much sums up our thoughts as well.
