Coastal Engineer/Surfer
Community

Beginning in the ocean as a lifesaver at the of six, James Lewis later decided to change path and follow a career in surfing at the age of 18. What was important was to stay in the ocean. In 2004, he graduated from Griffith University Gold Coast with a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, majoring in coastal engineering. He decided to put engineering on hold for a while, as there were still a lot of places he still wanted to see. He traveled around for the next 5 years, exploring new surf spots and generally living by the wind. He slowly settled down in his beloved Burleigh Heads with his wife Loren and their beautiful son Mason. After slowly getting back into the workforce, initially as a lifeguard then as an engineer for the City of Gold Coast, he then found his dream position in coastal engineering. His specialty is numerical wave modeling and deployment of offshore instrumentation.
