John Morris was born in Washington and grew up in Southern California. He started surfing at Newport River Jetties in 1962. He then migrated northward in several steps, settling above the 45th parallel in the late 1980s after a three-year break living in the rural South, as well as a stint in Southeast Asia. He switched to riding prone exclusively after five joint replacements.
