New England is indelibly linked to shark attacks. Thanks to the movie Jaws, the threat of a great white lurking off the East Coast is seared into the public consciousness, even though they actually occur quite rarely.
On the other hand, rarely doesn’t mean never, as a woman found out this week.
Emergency crews responded to Norton Point Beach in Edgartown, Massachusetts, around 1:40 p.m. on Monday. They tended to a woman in her late 20s who received an injury to her leg that was consistent to an animal bite, according to Edgartown administrator James Hagerty, who spoke with NBC. He also added that the woman’s injuries were non-life-threatening, and that there was no expectation that she would lose her leg.
In response, South Beach was closed to swimmers for several hours following the incident.
“The town appreciates the prompt response of emergency personnel and beach staff,” wrote Hagerty in a statement. “Beachgoers are reminded to remain aware of their surroundings while in the water and to comply with instructions from lifeguards and any posted beach advisories.”
