Anyone in the market for a ski resort? A small Maine ski area just went up for sale for around $3.5 million.
The resort in question is Mt. Jefferson Ski Area. Located in Lee, about 60 miles from Bangor, Maine, it’s a small operation, with just three lifts, 12 runs, and a 432-foot vertical drop. The resort was first built in 1964, when six locals reportedly contributed $5,000 each to developing it.
In 2016, Mt. Jefferson was bought from the family of one of the original founders by online event ticket marketplace owner Kevin Zimmerman. “I originally bought the place to throw a music festival, and that just didn’t really pan out,” Zimmerman told WABI 5. “We added the tubing, and we got the skiing going and everything.”
However, while the resort has been in operation for over 60 years, the past few seasons have been tough. “Right after COVID, we slammed it,” explained Zimmerman. “What we dealt with the last two, three years is we have not had enough snow. And that’s a big reason why the Delano’s sold this place, because they saw it before I did, that the weather pattern was changing, because a lot of these storms are going out to sea now, are going over us.”
In January, Zimmerman announced the 2025-2026 winter would be the mountain’s last. He added that he was considering turning the property into a nonprofit, but that idea never came to fruition.
So, who’s gonna buy this thing?
