The president and CEO of the National Ski Areas Association is stepping down. After two years heading the organization, Michael Reitzell will be leaving the position, citing personal reasons.

“Over the past two years, my wife Kristen and I have navigated significant health issues within our family, including difficult news more recently,” he explained to SAM Magazine. “Those experiences have given us a different perspective on our priorities and how we want to spend our time in the years ahead. With two young children, we’re increasingly mindful of how precious these years are and the importance of making more room for family.”

Before running the NSAA, Reitzell served as president of Ski California, the trade association representing ski areas in California and Nevada. Prior to that, he was an attorney representing resorts in the region. In the announcement, he clarified that this new development will not end his involvement in the ski industry. “While I’m stepping away from this role, I’m certainly not stepping away from the industry or the people who make it so special,’ he added. ‘My work in this industry and shaping its future is far from over, and I look forward to the years ahead.’

Reitzell’s departure, which takes effect on November 10, 2026, also begins a search for his replacement. “On behalf of the NSAA Board, I want to thank Mike for his passion for the industry, initiating several tangible initiatives over the past two years that we can build upon, and for his commitment to a smooth transition,” said NSAA board chairman Stephen Kircher. “We wish him and his family well during a difficult time.”
