South African Matt Bush is a gifted climber, no doubt. One only needs to take a look at his Instagram page to see that the 32-year-old from Cape Town has put hand-to-rock in some incredible places. Mostly without ropes and protective gear. While Alex Honnold is probably the world’s best-known free soloists, there are plenty of hardcores out there who practice this obscure – and high-stakes – form of climbing.

Above, you can see Matt has a good feel for what he’s doing. But as with any climber who chooses to scale tough routes without gear, they must first choreograph every single movement. For that process, you can have a look at this video from 2017:
