The Inertia

I’ll admit I’ve been a bit salty in my old age these past few April Fools Days. But I think social media is the problem here, not me. See, pre-internet and pre-social media, April Fools Day required well-crafted pranks — the kind of effort that made Justin Timberlake cry on MTV (wasn’t joking about the old age). But now the tradition of a joke-filled day is nothing more than our feeds filled with fake headlines and fake announcements from influencers and outlets who feel obligated to participate. By my count, at least 102 percent of the April Fools posts I’ve seen today have fallen totally flat. And this is during an era when we already have to check every announcement and every headline to find out if it’s real the other 364 days of the year anyway (wasn’t joking about getting salty).

With all that in mind, waking up to news of a powder day anywhere out West feels exactly like the kind of stuff an influencer would have cooked up for their April Fools post today. The hottest March in memory closes out by bringing snow for the first day of April? Too good to be true. But we’d all heard murmurs of a storm brewing for this week, and sure enough, a handful of resorts welcomed some fresh snow. PowderChasers forecast as much as a foot and a half to two feet spread through different mountain ranges.

At least four to six inches fell at Mammoth overnight Tuesday and more was expected throughout the day. Not exactly a snorkel-inducing powder day, but certainly a welcome and rare sight lately.

Out in Utah, Brian Head Resort operations started the day with only a few inches of snow but expect more throughout Wednesday. “The fresh snow is a welcome boost, and we’re incredibly grateful for the support our guests have shown this  season,” said Amber Palmer, marketing manager at Brian Head Resort. “We’re equally grateful for our team, whose hard work every day keeps the mountain running and gives our guests the freedom to ski late into spring.”

It may not be much, but at least it’s real.
