The Inertia

For two days, Solano Salazar clung to a foam cooler as he floated in the open ocean off Columbia’s Pacific coast. According to the Guardian, the man and his friend set out for a fishing trip on Friday, and two days later their boat was capsized due to bad weather. Wednesday, the Colombian navy, which happened to be conducting training exercises in the area, spotted and rescued Salazar.

According to ITV news, Salazar said, “I am OK now because the navy rescued me. I thought I was going to die. I didn’t think about anything else.” It is frightening to put yourself in Salazar’s position. Not knowing what is lurking below and questioning whether you are going to live or die will frighten just about anyone. Salazar is lucky to have been spotted by the Columbian Navy, but we are still wishing Salazar’s companion a safe return home to his friends and family.
