What happened to Poopies? The unfortunately nicknamed surfer (real name Sean McInerney) put in years as a frequent Jamie O’Brien collaborator, but has been notably absent from his vlogs for some time. Now, during a visit to pumping Lowers, JOB reunited with his affable sidekick and got an update on what’s been going on in the world of Poopies.
The video didn’t start there immediately, though. First off, O’Brien made a detour to take part in his second-favorite type of surf (after whomping barrels): river waves. Despite the fact that moving sand to open a river into the ocean has proven to be a surprisingly controversial practice over the years, they managed to find a sweet spot so they wouldn’t run afoul of the authorities.
“If this was your average Sunday, there’s no chance they would let us break this,” explained O’Brien. “The lifeguards would clip us. They’re pretty on to it. But a day like today, no one really cares. It’s raining and most people are staying inside, except for us surfers getting out there and just making the best of every day.”
However, no surf trip to Southern California would be complete without a visit to Trestles. The all-time wave (and soon-to-be Olympic venue) may be a distinct change of pace from O’Brien’s Pipeline home break, but he showed that he can do just as much damage on a performance wave. It was also where he met up with Poopies, who gave us a quick rundown on where the hell he’s been.
It turns out that he hasn’t been missing at all, just doing his own thing. McInerney has been working construction while building up a YouTube channel of his own. Most impressively, he recently celebrated the milestone of three years and four months sober. The reunion was also a welcome return to the sophomoric tone of bygone JOB vlogs.
