Kelly Slater has accomplished a lot in his life. Eleven world titles. The Surf Ranch. And perhaps most importantly, the role of Jimmy Slade on Baywatch. He’s the most famous surfer in the world. Non-surfers might not know the name John John Florence, but they know the name Kelly Slater. Despite that fame, he still remains something of an enigma—his competitiveness is legendary and his feats will likely never be matched, but, likely by his own design, there is so much the public doesn’t know about Kelly Slater. In this episode of the World Surf League’s Sound Waves, we get a peek at a few surprising things about the GOAT: namely, Kelly Slater is not immune to nerves. One would imagine that, as a world champion eleven times over competing at a wave he created, he would not be nervous. But as the best competitors will tell you, the nerves don’t go away—they’re necessary to win, but keeping them controlled isn’t always easy. This is, perhaps, one of the most personal behind-the-scenes looks at Kelly Slater, and it’s nice to see that he is, indeed, human.
