The Inertia

Nobody satiates the hunger for surf porn like Mason Ho. Yes, a lot of it has to do with his unique talent. The man is purely entertaining any time his feet touch wax. His surfing is unpredictable and the waves he chases are unpredictable. But much of the content the surfing world churns out is…predictable.

But I guess that’s kind of the point, right? While many of the world’s best surfers are no less talented, there’s still a heavy reliance on day-in-the-life style storytelling or buzzy YouTube headlines that promise a worthy pay off. Mason just surfs, though. He shows you his board set up, or at least lists out the dims in a short description. Then he surfs. And we all watch. No storyline needed, just surfing. That is the pinnacle of what we call surf porn.

Now, a lot of Ho’s clips are propped up by his balls-to-the-wall style in crazy waves. And given that the guy films most of his sessions at home on the North Shore, there’s also no shortage of just all-around great waves to highlight. That’s not exactly the case here, where Ho recently visited Southern California en route to STAB HIGH in Virginia Beach. The conditions were predictably California – pretty weak, pretty small, grab the stubbiest, fattest thing you can find. And then Mason went out and did exactly what he does every time: he made it look fun.
