Watching Mason Ho is not really a good way to get a realistic sense of how surfable a wave is. The Oahu native is known for showing up to the shallowest, gnarliest, most rock-infested spots and absolutely ripping. So it’s best to take his revelation of a surf spot with a grain of salt.
But oh, is it fun to watch.
The latest comes from a recent trip to Japan, where Ho and Japanese barrel-hunter Keito Matsuoka teamed up to take on an unruly wedge. Amid a chaotic maelstrom of peaks and closeouts, the pair make the unsurfable seem… well, just barely surfable, honestly.
Still, Mason’s inimitable skill makes even the gnarliest wave look like a joy to ride. And his enthusiasm both in and out of the water is infectious (check out Ho checking out that steak).
Hopefully, this isn’t the end of Mason’s eastern sojourn, because I have a suspicion there’s many more untamed wedges on tap in the Land of the Rising Sun.
