It’s a testament to Nathan Florence’s adventurous spirit that we rarely get to see him at a recognizable spot (other than Pipeline). It seems like he’s always posted up on unknown islands or frigid northern reaches to track down elusive waves. Which makes his latest entry feel notable because it’s at one of the most recognizable spots in the world: Lance’s Right.
Over the decades, the spot has earned a well-deserved reputation as one of the best waves in the world. Also known as Hollow Trees or HTs, the Indonesian break is one of the most iconic in the Mentawais, and no stranger to the covers of surf magazines.
So while that means seeing Florence and a pack of fellow YouTubers dance through HTs’ cavernous barrels doesn’t quite have the same sense of discovery as, say, traipsing through northern Scotland, hunting down slabs – it does mean there’s a hell of a lot of good surfing going on.
Sometimes it’s nice to just go with what you know.
