Nazaré gets all the glory when it comes to Portuguese big waves, but that’s not all there is to be found. Enter Jardim do Mar. Located off the north coast of Africa, in the archipelago of Madeira, Jardim do Mar is a point break that holds its own against some of the best big waves in the world. What’s more, it just saw one of the biggest swells of the decade.
Of course, Nic von Rupp was there for it. The big wave surfer and Nazaré regular just dropped an edit of his most recent trip to the autonomous Portuguese region, which he posted to his YouTube channel.
Though he’s known for his affable charm and undying stoke, von Rupp gets straight to business in this post. In it, he and his coterie take on endless sets of massive waves, with just the raw sounds of the sea as a soundtrack.
“Jardim do Mar just delivered the heaviest waves in years — and Nic and the boys were there for all of it,” reads the video’s caption. “This is big wave surfing at its rawest — massive, unforgiving, and unmissable.”
