The Inertia

Editor’s Note: This feature is presented by our partners at Visit California.

Join Mike Lynch and Mario Ordonez-Calderon on the road for part two of their Southern California road trip adventure.

In this episode, we pick back up with the guys in Downtown LA for a taco tour with James Beard Award-winning author, Bill Esparza. Bill designed the tour so the guys could sample local flavors from three different Mexican states. Stop one, Sonoratown, specializes in the cuisine of Sonora, well known for its carne asada. Stop two, Cárnitas Los Gabrieles, featured Michoacán-style cárnitas. Stop three, Holbox, took us to the Yucatán Peninsula for seafood dishes. Three stops, three Mexican states, three amigos.

After the taco tour, Mike and Mario pointed the van east for some snowboarding at Big Bear Mountain Resort. It was smooth sailing until our crew drove headfirst into a blizzard. The inclement weather forced our team to split up: our production team, equipped with a four-wheel drive SUV made it to the mountains, while Mike and Mario were forced to take a safer route that landed them in Desert Hot Springs. Our camera crew hit the slopes at Big Bear Mountain Resort with local pro, Mike Gray, while Mike and Mario soaked in some sun and relaxed at Azure Palms in Desert Hot Springs.

The following day, our group reconvened at Cabot’s Pueblo Museum to learn about the history of Coachella Valley’s early settlers. Then, they got their adrenaline fix by ripping around ATVs in Palm Springs.

Our story ends back where it all started in La Jolla, where we capped off the adventure with a leap of faith at Torrey Pines Gliderport.

Mario Ordonez-Calderon enjoys his first flight at Torrey Pines Gliderport with pilot, Robbie Bacastow.
