A few years back, I met Ben Weiland on a surf trip to the South Island of New Zealand. While frolicking with sheep and getting pitted at empty beach breaks, we kindled a friendship. He showed me his art and I loved it! Time passed and my wife and I opened the Surfin’ Spoon Frozen Yogurt Bar. We had Ben mock up the logo and instantly knew this little spoon getting pitted had to have a story of his own.

The Surfin’ Spoon has now been open for a little over two years. We take a couple months off in the winter, so we dedicated this past frosty season to writing a children’s book! Ben flew to the Outer Banks, saw and felt the landscape, and of course grabbed a few wedging peaks in February while my wife, Whitney, and I worked on the story. The spoon is named Sebi (pronounced Sebee), after Whitney’s childhood companion, a sweet, loving golden retriever. Sebi’s journey follows my own which brought me to the Outer Banks at nine years old from Richmond, VA.

The Surfin’ Spoon: Sebi Goes Surfing was released in early July. We are currently selling the book in our store, online, at select surf shops and other local businesses. It is really fun watching shredders and non-shredders alike dive into the story and relate with having a dream, but having to overcome a few obstacles to see it come to fruition.
