About: Bruce Cowan

Surfer/Writer/Pranaglider

Bruce started surfing on boards with one fin and without a leash in the Huntington Beach area. He enjoys all forms of board surfing but one bright summer day, out of the blue he rediscovered the joy of riding variably shaped air-filled watercraft. While not surfing his beloved surf mats he splits his time equally between perfecting time travel and growing mustard greens in his garden. Thoughts on the Boardroom Show

Sunday, October 14th, 2012

Inclusion of the many other approaches to wave riding would add so much to The Board Room Show. Can we really celebrate surfing and the people that design our surf toys if we are only looking at one facet of the sport?

This Really Is My Favorite Time of Year

Friday, October 7th, 2011

The air is a bit cooler, the water is still warm and if you make it to the beach early enough you may be greeted by a bit of stiff offshore breeze. I love the fall!

How to Protect Your Mat

Saturday, August 13th, 2011

There are several ways to end your participation in waves like this. Pushing off the mat and free falling to the tube floor is always a good one.

What Was Your First Surfboard?

Friday, May 27th, 2011

I did what everyone else was doing – I bought a long board, rendered suddenly passé, stripped the glass off it, and shaped a new one out of the blank.

The Art of the Surf Check

Thursday, May 19th, 2011

Surf cams help you evaluate conditions much the same way looking at a picture of a Big Mac explains how it will taste.

I Need It To Be Summer

Thursday, March 3rd, 2011

I need to decide whether I should surf in the morning or in the afternoon, then surf both – just like yesterday. And the day before that.

Thoughts from My Morning Commute

Thursday, February 3rd, 2011

I spend the entire commute trying to avoid an accident whilst attempting to calculate my remaining PTO hours. Maybe enough for a surf?

How Could You Not?

Sunday, December 12th, 2010

A clever little poem celebrating the joys of alternative surf craft (Read: surf mats). Enjoy.

The Cold: It’s Coming

Monday, November 29th, 2010

Considering freezing surf conditions elsewhere, I’ll admit I have it easy. The point is, we all have a relationship with the cold. What’s yours?

I’m a Surfer…and I’d Like a Job

Tuesday, November 16th, 2010

As surfing is my chosen religion, I will require additional vacation days for swell events. (Best to keep the ACLU out of it, don’t you think?)
