Sustainability is so hot right now. And it’s heartening to see companies innovating new ways to create common products we all enjoy while reducing the product’s impact on the Earth, even just a little bit. Because, after all, riding something made from a dead tree ain’t helping anyone. Especially if there’s a better way. And apparently there is: weed. Er, hemp.

Rolkaz Collective is a company out of Slovenia that’s pioneering skateboard decks made from the stuff, along with flax and plant-based resin. The concept is simple, the average skateboard made of various woods is unsustainable. “Trees take around 60 years to mature before they can be cut down to make skateboards. Growing hemp only takes 12-14 weeks,” says Rolkaz in their Kickstarter campaign. Not to mention hemp is one of the strongest natural fibers known to man, making it perfect for skateboards.

The company’s decks look and feel like traditional skateboards and are available in a variety of sizes, but are yet to be commercially available – that’s where their Kickstarter campaign comes in.

The folks at Rolkaz distil their message this way: “Being less destructive to nature with every decision we make is what makes everything more simple and more relevant.”
