On September 14, Tim Watkins, 61, described as a “legend” in the local mountain biking community, rode off on a multi-use trail north of Colorado Springs, Colo. He never returned.

Three days later a hiker discovered the body of Watkins, reportedly haphazardly hidden under leaves and twigs just off the trail near Mount Herman Road in El Paso County. Watkins had reportedly been shot several times. Police have no known motive for the murder.

Watkins, an experienced, passionate mountain biker, was apparently riding a bike built by Jim Tessier. “I think of Tim as a legend in the mountain bike community,” Tessier told a local news station. “He had a passion for riding and loved it so dearly.”

Watkins was a bike mechanic, longtime trail advocate, and all-around good guy, according to members of his community. A single shoe was reportedly found on Mt. Herman Road, the first part of a ride known as the Limbaugh Canyon route. A bike was found nearby as well.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the incident while the mountain biking community in southern Colorado mourns.
