The Inertia

If there’s one holiday we feel is missing on the calendar, it has to be a celebration of powder. Problem solved: Ski Utah and Protect Our Winters are partnering up with Alta and Snowbird to bring lovers of the light and dry, ‘Pow Day’, to raise local and national awareness around the cause of environmental responsibility.

If you’ve ever driven up Little Cottonwood Canyon on a busy day or looked back at downtown Salt Lake City during high pressure, then you know the environmental chaos automobile use is creating in the mountains we love to play in. On January 13, 2016 –based on a half century of data, the state’s snowiest day of the year—Ski Utah and Protect Our Winters will be encouraging skiers and riders to carpool, take Utah Transit Authority (UTA) or ride-share to help lower CO2 emissions, reduce traffic congestion and increase the overall awareness around environmental accountability.

We’re excited to be part of this inaugural POW Day carpooling event to help address the air quality issues in the SLC metro area,” says Chris Steinkamp, director of Protect Our Winters. “It’s through events like this, that we’ll begin to change, showing everyone how easy and fun it can be and make carpooling to the mountains second nature.”

To reward participants of POW Day, founder of Discrete Clothing as well as a Protect Our Winters athlete, Julian Carr, has personally designed a limited edition POW Day hat to be gifted to all who take the free UTA bus or carpool/rideshare that day. Carr and fellow Protect Our Winters athlete Forrest Shearer, will be available to take laps with guests who join Protect Our Winters as members at the designated tents at the base of both Alta and Snowbird.

Organizers are also asking participants to meet at the Snowbird Tram Deck Plaza from 2-4 p.m. to learn more about environmental accountability and pick up a SNOCRU POW water-bottle with a chance to win other prizes from partners.
