Adam Coleman and Dean Lucas were expected to be in Guadalajara by November 21st, but sadly they never arrived.
The disappearances and deaths of Dean Lucas and Adam Coleman have become one of the most tragic and frightening stories to hit the global surf community in years. In response to the tragedy, the Mexican Federation of Surfing and Sinaloa State Surfing Association have coordinated with the surfers’ families so the entire nations of Mexico and Australia can memorialize the two surfers.
We are proposing all State Associations and Surf Clubs in Mexico hold simultaneous Memorial Paddle Outs for Dean Lucas and Adam Coleman this Sunday, December 13, at 10:30 a.m. The number of participants is not important, although of course, the more the better.
Our intentions are clear and simple: to express our condolences and solidarity to the families of Dean and Adam, friends and surfer brothers, and to show the world the love, brotherhood and solidarity of the surfing community of Mexico.
It’s critical to show the world another face of our country and our community, and make it clear that the majority of Mexico is not a violent land, and that the country and the people do not live in fear, chaos or insecurity. Mexico is full of friendly, warm and caring people and unfortunate tragedies such as this can happen anywhere in the world.
In late November, Lucas and Coleman were traveling through Mexico by van but never arrived in Guadaljara. They were scheduled to arrive in Guadalajara by November 21st, but were later classified as missing people by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Then on November 30th their van was found burned in Navolato, a known dangerous part of Mexico. The families have set up a corwdfunding page in the following days, raising over $65,000 dollars in 10 days to “support both families in getting over to Mexico and bringing Dean and Adam back home to WA safely.”
