When it comes to Hawaii, it must be incredibly difficult for surf filmmakers to create something unique. Every angle of every wave of every swell is basically covered at all times. For years, the epicenter of surfing has vomited out clip after clip of some of the most insanely beautiful waves, numbing even the most hardened of surf film connoisseurs to what they’re actually seeing.
Herbie Fletcher, though, has been around the surfing block a few more times than most, and as a result, he’s got loads of footage dating way back. In The Thrill is Back, a series with a serious ’80s flavor, Fletcher gives the viewer a healthy dose of Hawaiian nostalgia, full of leashless single fins, a young Sunny Garcia, and Laird Hamilton when he was simply surfing instead of doing whatever weirdness he’s getting up to these days.
