The Inertia

Surfrider Beach is one of the most important places in surfing history, and shooting the pier at Surfrider is one of those things that the people who became legends used to do. As Hurricane Marie’s swell began to show up in Malibu, Laird Hamilton (a familiar face in the area), reportedly showed up on a paddleboard and proceeded to stroke into the largest set wave of the day, according to this YouTube video. And then, of course, he shot the pier. On a paddleboard. Then the cameraman gets a little creepy, but the shooting the pier part is still awesome.

He proceeded to stroke into the largest set wave of the day. And then, of course, he shot the pier. On a paddleboard.

    So Laird…

  • patricia

Remember that one time Allen Sarlo shot the pier five times in one day? Or was it six?

    • Peter Moss

Yes it was six, I counted. Hopefully someone has the footage of Allen and Laird shooting it on the same wave at sunset.

    • Stephanie Santoro

Alan Sarlo was out yesterday and shooting the pier

  • PizzaDaHut

    look me! I am LAIRD!!

    • Kenneth David Ebling

U KNOW HE WAS GIVEN 6 MONTHES TO LIVE 5 YEARS AGO/HE IS THE MAN//HE LOVES THE OCEAN/HE RESPECTS THE OCEAN/AND HE NEVER KNEW HIS REAL DAD/SO HE CAN DO WHATEVER AND I LUV HIS INSPIRATION TO LIVE/IF I KNEW 100 PERCENT I WAS GOUIN TO BETTER PLACE.I WOULD BE OUT OF HERE/THE WORLD IS TOO MUCH FOR ME TODAY/BUT I TRUST THERE IS A GOD WHO LOVES ME ENOUGH

  • Tommy Williams

I dont know who that videographer was but he is my hero. he just raised the morale in my office (US ARMY) but 100 percent. Thanks buddy!! #doitforamerica #doitforfreedom

    • JaydedKing

The brainwashing is strong with this one.

  • Le Blanc

Jeez, that got weird… fast! Nice looking girl but easy with the filming man.

    • Chad Leith

It wasn’t weird.. What’s wrong with filming a pretty girl?

      • Le Blanc

No? Then post it on the net without her consent? If you like her, go talk to her instead of hiding behind a camera.

        • Chad Leith

People are getting too sensitive. Plus you wanna talk weird, you’re telling the person that filmed this to be easy on the filming by posting on a website that is commenting/reposting a YouTube video. It’s like you think you’re actually speaking to the video recorder. Perhaps you can talk to Laird and congratulate him by posting here as well and he will hear it!

          • Le Blanc

What a wonderfully thought out argument. I hadn’t realised that I couldn’t directly speak with that person through this page until you pointed it out. Thanks Chad.

          • Jean-Paul Sartre

And isn’t it amazing that all these letters form words…

        • Jeff Byrnes

No consent needed. She’s in a public place and as long as this isn’t used commercially it’s all good. Still, a bit creepy with the extended leering.

        • Warren Smith

So the millions of zoomed in video footage of random chicks in surf videos is ok? What has this world come to when people are getting sensitive over someone filming a hot chick?

        • OhSoRight

She’s in a public place. No consent needed.

      • Jeff Byrnes

Nothing. But the zooming and linger factor definitely gave the video a creeper vibe. If that was your lady and you saw a guy going a bit long on the peep I think you’d have a different attitude.

    • Jeff Byrnes

Yeah, I’m gonna agree. Just a tad too long with the lingering and zooming. A bit creepy, especially since Laird didn’t get “zoomed.”

  • gitano

Creepy or just setting up the cam for the next rider?

  • Del Ahleong

    Laird “The Man”!!

    • Kenneth David Ebling

U GOTTA ADMIT NOT BEING IN PRO CIRCUIT/NOBODY SURFS BETTER THEN LAIRD/U KNOW HE BEAT CANCER

  • cirruswind

    Bonus footage, amazing ride..

  • delaniac

is this before or after Laird ran over Brian E. and broke his arm when he ran into him?

    • James Robertson

      Exactly

  • Kenneth David Ebling

SUCH A FUN SPOT TO SURF/NEVER SHOT THAT PIER/ITS HISTORY JUST STANDIN G THERE/YA I AGREE/WHY WAS THAT CAMERA FOCUSING ON THAT CHICKS BUM SO MUCH?JUST A ORDINARY BUM/NO JLO

  • Kenneth David Ebling

UR TOO YOUNG TO REMEMBER DA CAT/NOBODY SHOT IT MORE EVER

  • Alan Shane Lewis

Second time I watched…Second time got chills…and THAT’S hard to do: -outside in Houston, -TX. Miss the Surf of SoCali….DONT miss, however, the NANNY FROM HELL State CA has irrevocably become.

    • Jean-Paul Sartre

Oh, we are suffering out here I couldn’t just tell you how much da State interferes with my life…you are soooo fortunate to be far away in Houston. I tell ya it is HELL.

  • Nicholas Padova

Just in case nobody noticed, the guy on the set wave behind the girl tucks into a closeout barrel…..

    • Jean-Paul Sartre

      That was nice, too!

  • GG

he’s filming the waves and she just happens to be in the line up

    • Jean-Paul Sartre

And the focusing on her ass was just to recalibrate his lens. It’s so obvious to me…

  • Peter Amschel

Dang Laird! You beez da man!

    • Jean-Paul Sartre

The most astute comment so far…

      • Jeff Byrnes

Not surprised to see you’re into tooting ass.

  • Jeff Byrnes

Not a difficult pier to shoot. You just need a big enough swell.

Try shooting the San Clemente of Ventura piers then you might have something to brag about.

And I’d love to see a video of the guy who roasted Hamilton.

    • Jean-Paul Sartre

Kelly Slater is a great surfer, a champion, and even he’s said Laird Hamilton is the most courageous big wave surfer in the world today. But I guess towing in to a sixty foot Jaws swell is no big deal, huh? I guess we shoulda seen the big one you caught the other day…poseur. Learn some respect!

      • Jeff Byrnes

A guy calling himself Jean-Paul Sartre throws “poseur” at me. That’s ripe.

        Thanks for the giggles, Wilbur.

  • Turtle

When the wave breaks here, don’t be there, or you’re gonna get drillllllllllled.

  • Jean-Paul Sartre

So, let’s see…we get Laird the Killer and a Killer Surfer Girl in the same video. Anyone who doesn’t see the logic (and beauty) in this needs to check his pulse.

  • KungFuKool

This young woman is older than 16. That said it’s still creepy. I’ve seen her on the beach before or after paddling out a few times. Big deal.
Laird is a little smaller than me, but he’s the big dog in the ocean.

    • Jean-Paul Sartre

My guess is that it’s pure projection: you’ve been caught staring at a girl’s ass and been embarrassed by it (for god only knows what reason) so now you think it’s creepy. Dude, we’ve been staring at girls in bikinis for decades and I have never heard anyone say it’s creepy.

  • Jean-Paul Sartre

Haven’t you heard? A pretty girl with a little dog is a test and an invitation.

  • Jean-Paul Sartre

We need to remember that long before we invented these petty jealous gods who threw lightning bolts and caused floods and generally wreaked havoc like little boys, we had the great goddess of fertility responsible for bringing forth life itself, reaffirming with every spring the very renewal that makes life worth living. The Fall had nothing to do with an Apple and everything to do with the Great Insult To Eve. She should be worshipped, adored and then, perhaps, we would be better men.

    • Jeff Byrnes

And the hits just keep coming!

You’re epic. Please, by all means, do continue. I can’t wait to see what crazy nonsense you come up with next.

      • Jean-Paul Sartre

Right, it’s just CRAZY man to remember one’s youth growing up by the Sea and surfing everyday and watching pretty girls. Life is beautiful and rich with all kinds of experience – but the Cynic knows no joy, huh?

        • Jeff Byrnes

          I knew you’d deliver.

And I only perv on chicks that consent.

  • Bill H

    Surf good. Girl gooder!

  • AmazedHuman

Wow! Double wow! Come on, forget the girl…oh, go ahead, give it a try, you can do it…and watch that wave action. Amazing.
