The Inertia

This morning’s XXL swell in Portugal set off big wave alarms around the world. A crew of hellmen/women converged on Nazaré, including Carlos Burle, Pedro Scooby, Felipe “Gordo” Cesariano, Hugo Vao, Maya Gabeira, Rodrigo Koxa, Sylvio Mancuso, Eric Rebiere, Andrew Cotton and of course, Garrett McNamara.

Carlos Burle might have set a new world record for biggest tow-in wave ever surfed. While that’s pure conjecture right now, time will tell.

I’m probably in the minority, but I’m bored by the big wave thing. Guys towing into 80 foot mush balls is about as far away from the normal man’s surfing as it gets. We get it – guys are charging, but just like I don’t care if a guy drives a golf ball 385 or 395 I don’t care if a wave is 50 or 70 feet. It’s big, they are surfing it, yahoo.

  • just call me kewl

As long as people are surfing these big waves because it’s what they love to do (not for some stupid competition) ; it’s okay to die doing what you love.
