The Inertia

The enormous swell that hit Hawaii last week produced more than just a huge mess at Haleiwa for the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. Positioned perfectly for Peahi, it ran into Maui’s north side and created monsters. A few of the world’s best surfers were on hand to tame them: Greg Long, Mark Healey, Ian Walsh, Peter Mel, and Isaac Stant, just to name a few.

We were there from around 8 am to around 4 pm and in all, maybe ten waves were ridden. The size of the waves were pretty insane for paddle in, and I’m sure it must have been hugely intimidating for the surfers. We were there for last year’s first paddle in session at Jaws in October, which was an amazing experience in itself, but looking back at the photos from this last swell and comparing them to last year, you can see that this was on a whole different scale.
