The ocean is home to many strange creepy crawlies. It’s a breeding ground for alien-like creatures. From the blobfish to the oarfish, some of the ocean’s inhabitants seem more like characters out of a Dr. Seuss book than a real animal. And the tiny, finger-sized handfish is one of the weirder ones. The creature is like a glitch in evolutionary progression; it’s technically is a fish, but it also walks and waddles like a frog.
And now, scientist Tim Lynch reports that there are only 79 of these little buggers left. The seafloor walking fish are only found in an estuary in Tasmania. In an attempt to ensure that the handfish continues to exist, Lynch has proposed a breeding program for the fish. We’re rooting for Lynch and his mission – loosing these weird and wonderful guys would be a shame! (Even if they are an evolutionary misstep).
