When a south swell hits the West Coast there’s no other wave that makes hearts drop quite like The Wedge. It’s freakish. It’s mean. You’re bound to see hundreds of people on the beach, a news van or five, and a melee of wipeouts that make your stomach turnover. And like a movie script written by the surf gods themselves, Labor Day weekend came and went with a good run of southern hemi swell for all those 3-day weekend warriors. This version of The Wedge is tame by its modern standards, but still worthy of a good summer sign off. It won’t be too long before this “little” spot in Newport Beach hibernates for the winter and snapshots like this are something we’ll al yearn for.
